Opportunities

The Watershed Remote Sensing Lab is based in the Department of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences at UNBC, in Prince George, British Columbia. We work at the intersection of watershed hydrology, cryospheric science, remote sensing and environmental sensor design.

Graduate students

Prospective graduate students (Master’s only at this time) interested in these themes are welcome to get in touch. Graduate work in the lab is normally through the Natural Resources and Environmental Studies (NRES) program at UNBC.

When you reach out, please include a short description of your research interests and why they fit the lab and your CV, highlighting any relevant fieldwork, programming or geospatial experience.

Current graduate postings

• Funded 2 yr MSc at UNBC - Glaciers, Snowpacks, and First Nations water security

Graduate projects could include the following themes (these are themes, not research questions):

• Remote sensing in watershed science

  • Advancing the use of lidar in hydrology

  • Testing new satellite sensors for hydrological applications

  • Thermal remote sensing of stream and lake temperature, from drones and from space, including remote-sensing-driven estimates of water temperature

• Open, low-cost monitoring

  • Democratizing hydrometric monitoring with open-source software

  • Developing low-cost, DIY, automated water samplers to understand water quality

  • Extending the RemoteLogger platforms

• Hydrology of northern BC

  • Progress towards a nested physical hydrological model for northern BC

  • The thermal regime of permafrost in northern BC and its impact on hydrology

  • Assessing the impact of glacier change on future water resources in northern BC

  • Extending the watershedBC platforms

Undergraduate students

Oppotunities exist in the WatRS Lab for undegratuate thesis research, part-time research assistant positions, and full-time summer positions. come These include opportunities to apply for NSERC Undergraduate Student Research Awards (USRA).
